The great Mosque was built in A.D. 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad.
Located on Manekchowk, the mosque also has a rauza of mausoleum which was again built by Sultan Ahmed Shah. Built with yellow sandstone, the mosque was only meant for the private use of the emperors.
The central dome under the main dome is that of Ahmed Shah and to its right is that of his Grandson Sultan Quteud din Shah in 1458. In 1537 the rauza was repaired and improved by Naukhan, State architect of the Sultans of Gujarat.
Jami masjid means Friday mosque, which was probably the largest mosque built in that era. The courtyard of the mosque is a huge spread of 87,096 square feet in area and the prayer hall contains 256 pillars and 76 pilasters.
A marvelous mosque of the city of Ahmedabad marks a place in the must places of the city and has also been featured in many Hindi films. The famous Heritage walk of the old city ends at Jami Masjid.
