Ever thought of welcoming the summer with the very happening and delicious Indian dessert, Matka Kulfi? It belongs to the family of ice-creams but more royal. It is the best way to escape from the scorching sun and enjoy the heat.
The history goes like this, though there have been traces of kulfi coming from the neighboring middle east, it is said to be the inventions of Mughals who reigned in 16th to 19th century in India. Some say that it must have originated from those few people living in the Himalayas knowing the various freezing techniques for sweetened liquids.
It is admired throughout many South Asian countries, Burma and Middle East because of its creamy and denser texture. It is made of condensed milk, along with various nuts and flavors like cardamom (elaichi), saffron (kesar), mango, rose, raspberry and numerous other flavors.
One of the health magazines claimed that kulfi is healthier than any other ice-cream. It has lesser calories and sugar as compared to ice-creams that have more carbohydrates and proteins and there you don’t have to be calorie conscious while having one as it not going to add to the fatty layer but would mesmerize your taste buds yearning for more and more.
Traditionally it was served in earthen pots (matkas) garnished with pistachios, fruit and nuts. But now you can find it anywhere on the streets especially during summer and at economical and reasonable prices.
There are various well known kulfiwals, like the one at Mumbai ‘New Kulfi Centre at Chowpaty’ and ‘Kuremal Mohanlal Kulfiwale ‘ at Chandani Chowk, Delhi. But for us Amdavadis, we can find these royal desserts anywhere near Municipal Market, Manek Chowk or Vastrapur. So next time when you are passing by any of these areas, do not forget to get one and make your summers more enjoyable!!
